High School
Most of the region’s high school sports events were weathered out last night. Some have been rescheduled.
- The Calumet at Negaunee hockey game will be played next Monday.
- The Baraga at Lake Linden basketball doubleheader has been rescheduled for tonight, weather permitting.
- The Westwood at Houghton girls basketball game has been put off until February 13th.
In boys basketball last evening..
- West Iron County lost to Negaunee 69-36.
In girls action…
- Ontonagon shaded Ironwood 47-44.
- Forest Park smothered Carney-Nadeau 68-29.
On the boys schedule tonight…
- Houghton hosts Ishpeming.
- Calumet welcomes Ontonagon. Coverage will begin around 7:00 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
- Chassell entertains Watersmeet.
- Forest Park travels to Stephenson.
In girls-boys doubleheaders tonight…
- Jeffers travels to Bessemer.
- Baraga plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell, with the boys varsity game at 4, and the girls at 5:30.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tips off at Ewen-Trout Creek.
Marquette continues to dominate the high school ski scene. Yesterday, the Sentinels swept a meet at Marquette Mountain.
- The Houghton boys placed second in both the slalom and giant slalom. Eli Heathman finished second in both races individually. Jack Haeussler finished seventh in both.
- The Houghton girls finished fourth out of four teams in both events. Rachel Sun placed ninth in both events individually.

College Basketball
For the third time this season, Michigan Tech guard Marcus Tomashek has been named the GLIAC’s Offensive Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Tomashek scored a career-best 45 points in the Huskies’ win over eighth-ranked Ferris State Saturday.
NHL
Lucas Raymond had a goal and three assists, and the Red Wings dispatched the Kings 5-2 last night. L-A grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but Detroit held them scoreless for the duration. Marco Kasper scored twice, Alex DeBrincat scored once, and Elmer Soderblom netted his first of the season. Cam Talbot made 24 saves.
The Wings have won three straight, and visit the Oilers Thursday. Coverage will begin at 8:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Former Northern Michigan University standout Dominik Shine made his Red Wings debut last night. In his ninth season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Shine got the call yesterday morning. He was on the ice for nearly 10 minutes in last evening’s contest. At age 31, he’s the oldest player to make his NHL debut in a decade.
NBA
The Pistons suffered their second straight loss last night, 110-91 to the Cavaliers. Cade Cunninghan scored 22, Malik Beasley added 19, and Jalen Duren grabbed 16 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the Pacers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
Former Milwaukee closer John Axford will be added to the Brewers’ Wall of Honor this summer. Axford spent all or part of six seasons with the Crew. In 2011, he recorded 46 saves – 43 in a row. Both are team records.
NFL
The deal isn’t done, but it looks as if the Lions have selected their new offensive coordinator. Reports say they’re negotiating with John Morton, who has been the passing game coordinator for the Broncos for the past two seasons. Morton is a Detroit-area native, played college football at Western Michigan University, and was a senior offensive assistant with the Lions in 2022.
