Strong winds and blustering snow remain in the forecast for much of today. Over the last two days with the Copper Country under a blizzard warning, Michigan state police have responded to several accidents on state highways.
Officers noted that many accident scenes had found a car in a ditch along US-41 between Calumet and Hancock. Law enforcement asks residents and visitors traveling in the region to use extreme caution while driving as high winds, falling, and blowing snow can limit visibility. MSP Calumet has suggested using M-26 as an alternative route to travel between locations.
Heavy lake-effect snow can build up in the tread of tires and cause a loss of traction in some areas on the roads. Especially at sections near steep inclines. Regional municipalities and road commission crews are working diligently to keep roads clean and safe for travel.
So far the Keweenaw County Road Commission has tracked more than 168 inches of snowfall in 2024 and 2025, surpassing last year’s season total of 153 inches.
