High School
In hockey Friday…
- Houghton netted two late goals to shade Hancock 3-2 in the annual Wing Ding game. After a scoreless first period, Damien Colombe put the Bulldogs on the board in the second, and Connor Arko tied it for the Gremlins. Houghton surged ahead with a Jack Sayen tally in the third period, but Max Heinonen’s goal off a faceoff retied the contest with six minutes remaining. Arko’s second goal of the night on a power play was the game winner. Brody Donnelly had two assists for the Gremlins, who outshot the Bulldogs 33-15. Brycyn Nettel got the win in net.
- Calumet spotted Marquette an early lead, then came back to edged the Sentinels 2-1. After Marquette’s Trey Savola scored in the first period, the Copper Kings got second-period tallies from Nathan Londo and Ben Anderson, and held on through a scoreless third period to avenge a loss earlier in the season. Beau Jukuri made 24 saves to claim the win in goal. Despite the victory, the Sentinels retained the Heritage Trophy, which is awarded to the team with the most points in the two-game season series.
- Jeffers routed Cheboygan 10-0, in a game that ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. Brit Heinonen had a hat trick. Brogan Turner, Cody Turner and Benton Rajala each scored twice, and Easton Therrian found the net once. Ethan Anderson logged three assists. Pierce Johnson earned the shutout in net, as the Jets outshot the Chiefs 40-12. Jeffers improves to 19-3 on the season.
In hockey today…
- Jeffers faces Gladwin at Cheboygan.
- The Wing Ding JV hockey game between Houghton and Hancock will begin at noon at Dee Stadium. That will be followed by the Powder Puck girls contest between the Houghton junior and senior classes. Money raised from that contest will support the graduation lock-in party.
In girls basketball last night…
- Hancock held back Houghton 44-41 to claim a Wing Ding victory. Emery Chynoweth paced the Bulldogs with 17 points, and Lydia Pelli added 13. Eva Gerard scored 13 for the Gremlins.
- Calumet spoiled Parents Night at Escanaba 68-40.
- L’Anse smothered Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 66-21.
- Chassell dropped a 33-31 heartbreaker at Bessemer.
- Baraga got past Jeffers 47-41.
- Forest Park downed West Iron County 48-41.
In boys action…
- Houghton shut down Hancock 61-21 in their Wing Ding game. The Gremlins led 44-4 at halftime, and rested their regulars through most of the second half. Lane Laux scored 14 for the Gremlins. Gage Chynoweth had nine for the Bulldogs.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City edged L’Anse 69-65. Liam Tourtillott scored 41 for the Blue Bolts, and Sam Lee had 33 for the Purple Hornets.
- Chassell lost to Bessemer 70-58.
- Ontonagon lost 69-56 at Wakefield-Marenisco.
With wins in boys basketball and hockey, the Gremlins claimed this year’s Wing Ding competition.

The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Eagle River Falcons tonight.

College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 5-3 to Bemidji State in the Winter Carnival series opener last night. The Huskies trailed 2-0 after two periods, but opened the third with a goal from Owen Baker. The Beavers then took command with three goals in a span of just over two minutes, driving Tech starting goaltender Ryan Manzella from the game. After Derek Mullahy replaced him the Huskies got goals from Matthew Campbell and Chase Pietila, but couldn’t complete the comeback. The Winter Carnival series concludes tonight, with faceoff at 5:07 at the SDC.
Gant Hindman’s late goal gave Lake Superior State a 3-2 victory over Northern Michigan last night. The Lakers scored twice in the opening period. The Wildcats tied it in the second, with goals from Grayden Slipec and Jesse Tucker. The four-game Cappo Cup total goals series concludes tonight at the Soo.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams visit Saginaw Valley State today.
Both Northern Michigan teams play at Wayne State this afternoon.
NHL
The Red Wings entertain the Lightning this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons outscored the 76ers 125-112 last evening – and did it without Cade Cunningham. The All-Star guard was rested to help him recover from an ankle sprain he’s been playing over. Malik Beasley powered the win with 36 points. Tobias Harris added 22. Jalen Duren netted 13, and grabbed 13 rebounds.

NFL
The Chiefs and Eagles play in the Super Bowl tomorrow night, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Tigers have designated reliever Mason Englert for assignment. The move opens a roster space for starter Jack Flaherty, whose return as a free agent is now official. Englert could remain with Detroit if he clears waivers.
Nordic Skiing
The annual Barneløpet tomorrow features Nordic ski races for children ages three through 17 at the Maasto Hiihto Trails. Registration begins at 1:00 in the chalet in Hancock. Races start at 2:00. There is no charge. For details and registration information, click here.
