Hancock residents could find it easier to keep their water leads from freezing, following action by the city council last night.
City Manager Mary Babcock explained that the city has historically not granted “let run” credits to property owners until a city-wide emergency status had been declared. She acknowledged, though, that there are some locations where the leads freeze more quickly than others. Owners of properties with a history of freezing up early can now ask for the credit.
The amount of water credited has also been standardized to 1,500 gallons.
The council also approved a water rate increase to $2.55 cents per thousand gallons.
The city is also mulling over the best location from which to launch the annual Bridgefest fireworks. Homeowners near the current site on Navy Street have complained that debris has fallen into their yards, and are worried about a fire risk.
Bridgefest organizers have considered a barge launch, but that’s costly, and the availability of suitable barges is limited. Mont Ripley was proposed, but that would require cooperation with Michigan Tech, and residents in that area.
The goal remains to have the display in a location where the fireworks can be seen over the bridge which the festival celebrates.
Babcock will continue discussions with the Bridgefest committee.
