Hockey means a lot to the communities of the Copper Country. From residents of nearby towns congratulating Jeffers High School on their recent run at a state hockey championship, to the annual rivalry game that highlights the region’s history with professional hockey. The sport finds people of all ages lacing up their skates to get out on the ice. The 2025 Copper Country Old Timers Tournament this weekend starts this afternoon. The tournament will include 43 teams. Many coming into town from outside the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Each year the tournament offers plenty of fun and nostalgia for families cheering on dad or an older brother. And this year kids can even cheer on mom. In 2025 the Copper Country OldTimers tournament will include a women’s division for Elite and Novice teams.
Puck drop for the first game kicking off the tournament weekend will occur at 4:40 today, between Calumet Electronics and Soumi Restaurant at the Houghton County Arena. Games throughout the tournament will keep people traveling around the region with games scheduled at the HoCo Arena, historic Dee Stadium, and Calumet’s cherished barn the Calumet Colosseum.
On Saturday the HoCo arena will host a spaghetti dinner during the game from 3 to 8 pm.
