A new resource has been created to help support and preserve one of the most iconic landmarks from the days of the Keweenaw copper boom.
Two anonymous donors have established a new endowment fund to underwrite activities at the Champion #4 mine and shaft in Painesdale.
The endowment will be managed through the Keweenaw Community Foundation, and administered by Painesdale Mine and Shaft, Inc.
The Champion facility was built in 1902, and modified in 1906. It remains largely intact since the mine closed in 1967. It is the only shaft house in the area that offers tours of its upper levels.
The donors noted that day-to-day operations are generally covered by small community donations. They hope the endowment will provide funds for more substantial preservation projects.
You can contribute to the endowment through the Keweenaw Community Foundation office at the Hancock Community Hub, or online.
