The Tigers fell just short of a series sweep against the Royals, with a 4-3 10-inning loss yesterday. Kansas City grabbed an early lead with two runs off Tarik Skubal in the second inning. Detroit tied the game in the fifth, with RBI singles from Kerry Carpenter and Zach McKinstry, then took the lead when McKinstry singled home Gleyber Torres in the seventh. K.C. tied the contest with a run off Tommy Kahnle, then plated the winning run off Tyler Holton in the top of the 10th. The Tigers advanced a runner to third in the bottom of the 10th, but Dillon Dingler’s infield pop-out ended the game.
The Tigers open a home set against the Padres tonight. Randy Vasquez will pitch against Keider Montero. Because of Pistons playoff basketball, Tigers coverage will begin at 6:15 on KBear 102.3.
Montero is starting as the Tigers continue with a six-man rotation during an unusually busy stretch of games.
Carpenter left yesterday’s game in the ninth inning, after after tweaking a hamstring while running out an infield single in the seventh. He’ll be evaluated today.
The Brewers blew out the Athletics 14-1 yesterday. Logan Henderson struck out nine A’s over six innings in his major league debut. Rhys Hoskins had three hits including a home run, and drove in four runs. Christian Yelich and Brice Turang each had two hits, and drove in three runs. Milwaukee set a new team record with nine stolen bases – six in the first inning.
The Brewers visit the Giants tonight. Quinn Priester will start against Robbie Ray.
NHL
Three more Stanley Cup tournament quarterfinals opened yesterday.

Piston Cade Cunningham is one of three finalists for the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award. Malik Beasley is a finalist for the Sixth man Award, and coach J.B. Bickerstaff is a finalist for Coach of the Year honors.
The Bucks play game two of their series against the Pacers tomorrow night in Indianapolis.
Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo has been named as a finalist for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award. He’s won the honor twice on his career.
