High School
In high school hockey last evening…
- Houghton routed Traverse City Central 8-0, in a game that ended 36 seconds early because of the mercy rule. Jay Halonen and Ethan Hainault scored first-period goals, and Jace DeForge found the net in the second stanza. DeForge added another as the Gremlins poured it on in the third period. Connor Arko, Noah Maillette, Braden Kari, and Gage Gullstrand also scored. Cooper Flachs earned the win in net, as Houghton outshot T-C 28-9.
- Calumet opened its season with a 7-2 loss to Howell. The Highlanders took control early, with four first-period goals off Beau Jukuri, then added three more off Jacob Garrow over the final two frames. Nate Londo and Brendan Boberg found the net for the Copper Kings. Hear the game replay here.
The eight-player high school football champions will be crowned today, with the finals being staged at the Superior Dome.
- In Division One, Pickford will face Dekkerville at 11:00. Each of those teams is unbeaten.
- In Division Two, Forest Park will take on Morrice at 2:00. Each of those teams has one loss this season. Hear streamed coverage of the game from WIKB here.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 5-2 to Minnesota State last night. The Huskies led 2-1 after two periods, thanks to goals from Rylan Brown and Tom Leppa. The Mavericks erupted for four goals in the third period to take the win. Derek Mullahy made 22 saves, and took the loss in net for Tech.
Those teams play again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The NMU hockey squad has the weekend off.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan volleyball teams are in Big Rapids for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Semifinals will be played today, with the Huskies facing top-seed Ferris State at noon, and the Wildcats taking on second-seed Grand Valley State at 2:30. The championship game will be played tomorrow.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team plays at St. Cloud State today, and Minnesota Duluth tomorrow.
The NMU women’s team plays at Minnesota Duluth today, and St. Cloud State tomorrow.
The Tech men’s team couldn’t overcome an 11-point halftime deficit, and dropped an 80-70 decision at sixth-ranked Minnesota Duluth yesterday at the St. Louis County Basketball Classic. Marcus Tomashek scored 29 points. The Huskies face third-ranked Minnesota State Moorhead today.
The Northern men’s team lost to Minnesota State Moorhead 82-71 yesterday. Julien Smith and Dylan Kuehl each scored 16 for the Wildcats, who will face Minnesota Duluth today.
College Soccer
The Northern Michigan women’s soccer team closed its season with a 4-1 loss to Drury University in the opening round of the NCAA Division II tournament yesterday. Milly Pistorious scored the Wildcats’ lone goal.
NHL
The Red Wings welcome the Bruins tonight. Coverage will start at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Magic tonight. Ausar Thompson may make his season debut for Detroit. He’s been out since late last season because of a blood clot issue.
MLB
Zach McInstry and Andy Ibáñez will be back with the Tigers next season, after agreeing to one-year contracts yesterday. The Tigers tendered offers to their remaining seven arbitration-eligible players, including pitchers Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, Will Vest, Jason Foley and Beau Brieske, catcher Jake Rogers, and outfielder Matt Vierling.
The Brewers agreed to a one-year contract with catcher Eric Haase. They declined to tender an offer to pitcher Hoby Milner, who becomes a free agent. Milwaukee did tender offers to catcher William Contreras, and pitchers Devin Williams, Aaron Civale, Nick Mears, Trevor Megill and Joel Payamps.
NFL
The Lions visit the Colts in a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift. Tight end Sam LaPorta is expected to return to the lineup after missing last week with a shoulder injury. Rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw will miss the game with a hamstring problem.
The Packers entertain the 49ers in a 4:25 contest. Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper and cornerback Jaire Alexander have been ruled out.
The Rams host the Eagles in the Sunday night game on 99.3 The Lift.
