Firefighters gained control of an early morning blaze in Calumet today. At around 1 am this morning Calumet Township Firefighters were called to a residence on 11th Street in Calumet. Houghton County sheriff’s deputies were also called to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters began work to control the fire in the second story of the home. Sheriff deputies report the homeowners were met outside, and reported no one was injured in the fire. The homeowner told police, that while on the main floor, he smelled smoke coming from upstairs. He found the air was thick with smoke, and he removed any nearby ammunition from the room before retreating from the residence. Calumet Township fire fighters believe the fire was caused by an electrical issue. The Houghton County Sheriff would like to thank the Calumet Township Fire Department and Michigan state police for assistance at the scene.
