A break in the weather allowed for some high school sports contests yesterday.
In baseball…
- Jeffers fell to Ishpeming 6-2 and 8-2.
- L’Anse lost to Iron Mountain 5-2 and 3-1.
In softball yesterday…
- Calumet traveled to Ironwood, but rain stopped the first game of their doubleheader after four innings, with the Copper Kings up 11-0.
The Houghton girls soccer team entertains Sault Ste. Marie tomorrow.
NHL
The Red Wings’ season lasted 56 seconds longer than expected, but ended with a 4-3 loss to the Maple Leafs last night. Detroit built a 3-1 lead, with goals by Austin Watson, Justin Holl and Alex Debrincat. The Leafs came back, and tied the game with two seconds left in regulation. Scott Laughton netted the game-winner in overtime. Cam Talbot made 16 saves.
The Wings finish the season with a record of 39-35-8, and missed the playoffs for the ninth straight season.
This year’s Stanley Cup tournament begins tomorrow.
NBA
The NBA playoff field will be filled in tonight, as the Play-In competition ends.
- The Hawks host the Heat to determine the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.
- The Grizzlies entertain the Mavericks to decide the eighth seed in the Western Conference.
MLB
The Tigers snapped their two-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the Royals last night. Spencer Torkelson had two hits and drove in three runs. Riley Greene had three hits and drove in two runs. Reese Olson scattered four hits over five shutout innings to earn the win.
The Tigers entertain the Royals again tonight. Reese Olson will pitch against Cole Ragans. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and entertain the Athletics tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against J.T. Ginn.
Milwaukee has sent struggling third baseman Oliver Dunn down to Nashville. Caleb Durbin, one of the players the Brewers got from the Yankees in the Devin Williams trade, has been brought up to make his major league debut.
