Michigan Technological University will stamp the seal of approval on another class of graduates by the end of the weekend. The spring commencement in 2025 will have graduate students receive diplomas on Friday, while undergraduates will shift the graduation cap tassel to the left on Saturday.
Graduate students will hear from graduate address speaker Tabasum Hamdard, who earned a master’s degree in data science and a certificate in applied statistics, alongside the class of 2025. Hamdard plans to inspire her fellow graduate students while reflecting on her journey from Afghanistan to the Copper Country. While at Michigan Technological University she developed The Infinite Loop, a journal for undergraduate computing research, and an ambassador for Women in Data Science.
Undergrad student speaker Mary Christine Stevens graduates with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in French. A yooper through and through, Stevens hails from Menominee and plans to remain in the Copper Country following graduation taking a full-time position on the Daily Mining Gazette staff. While in school she worked with the local newspaper as an intern and published her first book Little Gold Rose.
Both ceremonies will enjoy an address from Michigan Tech alumna and Olympian, Deedra Irwin, who competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. In her 15-kilometer individual biathlon event she placed seventh, the highest place finish of any United States biathlon athlete in an international championship. She says she’s honored to return to Houghton and the university’s campus to witness a milestone achievement in all students’ journeys.
More than 1200 students will earn degrees from Michigan Technological University this spring, including more than 100 doctoral graduates.
Commencement ceremonies are live streamed by the university for family and friends without a ticket inside the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena or unable to celebrate with graduates in person. Parking at the Student Development Complex first comes, first served. Visitors should park in lots 22 and 24. There is limited handicap-accessible parking, if you have mobility limitations contact the ticketing office to learn about accommodations.
Please allow time for bag checks before entering the arena.
Friday’s graduate commencement will begin at 3 pm. Saturday’s ceremonies will begin at 10:30 am. The SDC will open at 8:30 am each day, and the University Images and Campus Bookstore will also open during the day.
